Is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Public Health?
July 26, 2025 is the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This date is commemorated every year with National Disability Independence Day. As we take a moment to celebrate this landmark legislation, we want to share some resources here on campus.
- If you are interested in learning more about disabilities or are considering working with people with various abilities in the future, please check out the Life Stages and Disability page on our Exploratory Pathways. The list of courses on that page link directly to Workday. This page was put together for students who plan to pursue work as community health professionals such as those in Youth and Family Services, Senior Services, or Disability Services. These courses will be helpful for other students too, such as those interested in research, social work, or clinical practice.
- The Life Stages and Disability page also contains links to other institutions and programs of study here on campus. Please check out them out for more resources.
- In addition, if you have a disability or need accommodations, please check out WashU’s Disability Resources. They are the official resource here on campus.
Here at Public Health & Society, we like to ask the question: “Is It Public Health?” The government administers the ADA out of the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. While the ADA is a civil right, we say that it is public health too.
Our series, "Is it Public Health?" examines all the ways public health factors into our daily lives.
